2024 WOMAN OF GOLD
I am a woman, a mum, a wife, and a person with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). MS is a chronic disease where my immune system overreacts and attacks my brain and spinal cord. These attacks cause permanent disability in a variety of ways. There is no cure for MS, and it is progressive.
Economic equity is financially recognising my value in paid and unpaid work. I volunteer on a Board, I work part-time and I am raising a wonderful human. I work in traditionally lower paid industry of disability. In an equitable society these industries would be just as financially valued as any other.
Equity is a restructure of society, schools, work, and male dominated industries to be more compatible with family life. Equity is providing the support and resources to make a world that has no limitations on my gender or my disability.
“Equity to me is a changed world. We live in a patriarchal society. There can be no true equity for women or gender diverse people within it. We also live in a worship of wellness society. There can be no true equity for people with disabilities, like me, within it. ”
