Reclaiming Strength: Challenging and Revisiting Gender Inequity Through Mixed Media Collage, 2024
Mixed media
Artist Statement
In my artwork, I explore the theme of gender inequity and the historical perception of women's roles. Through a combination of painted canvas and old collaged magazine advertisements, I aim to shed light and remind us of the sexist and derogatory portrayals of women in the past that laid the foundation for women’s struggles that continue today.
I have incorporated elements of Country, symbolising the timeless and universal strength of women. The combination of these natural elements with the collaged magazine articles creates a powerful visual commentary on how women have been objectified and misrepresented throughout history.
To challenge the messaging of these advertisements, I have placed hot pink shields over some of the advertisements. These shields represent the strength and resilience of women and importantly Aboriginal women, inviting viewers to question the harmful narratives perpetuated by these images. By bringing these articles to the forefront, I emphasize the importance of acknowledging and learning from our past, ensuring that we do not forget the injustices that were once deemed acceptable by big parts of the population.
One particular article that caught my attention highlighted the notion of purity being associated with whiteness. Through my artwork, I aim to question and challenge this message, highlighting the inherent racism and discrimination embedded within such narratives.
Ultimately, my artwork serves as a visual catalyst for dialogue and reflection on the history of gender inequity. By reclaiming the strength and agency of women, I hope to inspire a more inclusive and equitable future, where all individuals are valued and respected regardless of their gender.
