Ann Horrocks

2024 WOMAN OF GOLD

With support from my parents, especially my mother, I completed Yr 12 in 1959 and began studying a Diploma of Applied Chemistry at night school at RMIT while working full time in the Research Laboratories at Kraft Foods. Whilst there, I setup a Tasmanian laboratory testing frozen vegetables - a new commodity at the time.
After graduating, moving to Bendigo, and having a family, I began work at ADI, a Defence Manufacturer, initially in the office, then in the computer area followed by facility chemist.

With great support from fellow employees, I advanced to roles in OH&S, Metal Finishing, Laboratory Management and Project Management for major Defence projects.
While at ADI, I joined Zonta in 1988, initially to enjoy the company of other women supporting our local community and Zonta International projects.
At the ADI workface, I was treated as an equal and relished the support and friendships I formed. Working in an entirely different scientific area, this support was greatly appreciated.
Through Zonta I have been given the opportunity to engage and develop from club to international levels.

“We cannot be complacent to achieve full equality and must continue to advocate at all levels to achieve this outcome.”
