Sue Clarke

2024 WOMAN OF GOLD

When I was around twelve, I began to understand that being treated as an equal at home encouraged to read, discuss, and question matters of social justice, politics, structural and financial barriers for the less powerful was not a usual experience for my friends.

I must admit I began to think maybe I should be cautious, listen more, and speak less, both internal and external pressures to conform and not be too different. I did contain my thinking for a while, but the hierarchical class system was too much when I began to train as a nurse.

Throughout my life, I have appreciated that start in life, and even now, in my mid-seventies, I continue to question gender bias, structural barriers, and inequity; my questioning and reactions are often driven by an impact on an individual or a group, a sense this is not fair.

Gender Equity is everyone's business. A society that does not respect all people without discrimination needs leaders to step up and speak out; all of us have a responsibility to encourage and question individual and systematic bias and celebrate respectful change.

“Gender bias undermines our social fabric and devalues all of us; together, we can make a difference, and I look forward to continuing to participate in processes that aspire to achieve a more equitable community. ”
