2024 WOMAN OF GOLD
It is said that shame dies when stories are told. From 6 years old until the age of 18, I was subjected to regular sexual abuse at the hands of a trusted male family friend. Keeping the shame of the secret had a profound impact on my identity as a woman; how I developed as a strong resilient leader; and ultimately set my path as a Social Work professional in trying to shift, change and support vulnerable women and children in society.
The context that shapes vulnerability is founded by historical gendered power imbalances. Female oppression and male privilege define and misrepresents how women should behave; if they should be believed; what they should tolerate; and how they should be treated. Tackling the causes of sexism will support the elimination of gendered base violence. I believe we are all responsible in changing the story.
There will be no justice for my historical sexual abuse, but I would like to live in a world where others know safe systems and support seeking justice towards healing our future. I know I am not alone.
“I have one wish for my daughter’s future, that is to have a gender equitable world. One where women and girls will not be vulnerable and susceptible due to gender imbalance.”
