2024 WOMAN OF GOLD
I was fortunate to study Culture and Photojournalism at University. I have worked as a Photographer and Cultural Development practitioner for over 25 years.
Early in my career, as a freelance photojournalist, I found an industry lacking female photographers, their work and their stories were underrepresented in print media and in galleries. I was told that the Arts sector was competitive and that I wouldn’t achieve much in the Arts .
I was determined to ‘carve a niche’ for myself and my pictures. Conviction, hard work and encouragement from other women mentors led to extraordinary experiences, achievements, and conversations. When documenting Nelson Mandela, he asked if I enjoyed being a photographer. I proudly replied, yes, I do, I really love creating pictures Madiba. I was the ONLY photojournalist permitted to document Madiba that day.
