Bala Starr

2024 WOMAN OF GOLD

In my earliest days in the art world, straight out of university, I worked in small, under-resourced organisations looking to respect and recognise what were strong but often undervalued art practices. I’ve always looked to talent, urgency and passion to draw out quality. Later in my career, the challenges of driving unique projects through larger institutions have been among the most difficult aspects of my work.

“Gender equality would change the way our cities, landscapes and organisations look, as well as how they function. In the art world, the glass ceiling I’m concerned about is the one that right now holds back the best creative minds. Mentoring and advocating for diverse women can help redraw the gendered divisions that constrain us all.”

- Bala Starr, Director, La Trobe Art Institute
