Marnie Baker
2024 WOMAN OF GOLD
“I’ve been part of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank since 1989, having held many positions in the Bank in that time, including at Sandhurst Trustees where I was appointed the first female CEO in 2003. I’ll always remember when I told my parents I had been appointed to the role of CEO and Managing Director of the Bank in 2018. My father said, ‘I am not just proud of you for getting the role, but I am proud of you for not having changed who you are.’ That meant more to me than any other comment I could have received.”
Marnie was appointed CEO and Managing Director of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank commencing July 2018 and was appointed Deputy Chair of the Australian Banking Association in December 2019. Marnie has over 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry, across Banking, Trustee and Custodial Services, Financial Planning, Insurance and Funds Management. Marnie has been with the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Group since 1989, and an Executive of the Bank since 2000.
Prior to her appointment to CEO, Marnie’s most recent positions include Chief Customer Officer which had responsibility for all the customer facing and direct customer support businesses across the Group, Executive Corporate Resources with responsibility for human resources, information technology, legal, assurance, property & security, procurement and corporate services, as well as previous positions of Chief Information Officer, Group Treasurer and Chief Executive Officer Sandhurst Trustees.
Marnie has a strong understanding and connection to regional Australia and is an innovative leader, with a well-developed commercial acumen and a level-headed and balanced approach personally and professionally. Her excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to build relationships and to influence others for results are supported by her ability to see the big picture as well as attend to the detail.
“With a little over 10 per cent of ASX 200 leaders being women, strong female leadership representation is an important, foundational step toward equity. Everyone benefits from gender equity. It's not only the right thing to do – or a women’s issue – it's a human right. And it makes good business sense.”
